Introduction
Tradenames: Panafil-White, Kovea, Rystan
Topical agent containing papain, urea with or without chlorophyll.
Topical papain withdrawn from US market in 2008 due to safety concerns & unapproved status.[4]
Panafil-White: urea 10%, papain 10% (30 g)
Indications
- acute & chronic skin lesions
- varicose, diabetic & decubitus ulcers
- postoperative wounds
- pilonasal cyst wounds
- carbuncles
- traumatic wounds
Contraindications
- infected wounds[3]
Dosage
- apply directly to lesion & cover with appropriate dressing
- daily or twice daily changes of dressing are preferred
- with each redressing, irrigate with normal saline
- remove necrotic material
- avoid hydrogen peroxide which may inactivate papain
Adverse effects
- not common (1-10%)
- uncommon (< 1%)
- irritation (from enzymatic exudate)
