parathyroid autotransplantation

Indications

involves taking parathyroid tissue and placing it into the muscle of either the neck or forearm
in cases where the autotransplant contains hyperactive parathyroid tissue, it is usually placed in the arm for easy access if it were to grow & result in recurrent hyperparathyroidism
a lag of 4-6 weeks occurs (for blood supply) before the transplanted tissue becomes active
