Indications

• coexistence of a 'cold' thyroid nodule in Graves disease
• Graves ophthalmopathy
• thyroid carcinoma

Complications

• inadvertent removal of parathyroid glands resulting in hypoparathyroidism with & hypocalcemia
• hoarseness due to recurrent laryngeal nerve injury

Management

• selective calcium supplementation
