Indications
- neonatal polycythemia
- Rh-induced hemolytic disease of the newborn
- severe metabolic disease
- severe hyperbilirubinemia (jaundice in the newborn) not responding to phototherapy
- severe sickle cell crisis
- sickle cell-associated stroke
- acute chest syndrome
- toxicity of certain drugs
- babesiosis (severe), malaria (severe)[2]
Complications
- does not increase blood viscosity
