- sickle-shaped, spindle-shaped or crescent-shaped erythrocyte seen in peripheral blood smears of patients with sickle cell disease
- sickle cells are elongated, crescentic-shaped erythrocytes
- the sickle-cell appearance occurs secondary to hemoglobin precipitation under conditions of low oxygen tension
