Etiology

Herpes simplex

Epidemiology

• most common infectious cause of corneal blindness in US
• recurrence:
  • 1 year 20%, 2 years 23%, 20 years 63%
  • fever, stress, sunlight or eye injury may precipitate recurrence

Pathology

• painful lesion on eyelid or surface of eye
• corneal inflammation

Complications

• stromal keratitis

Management

• vidarabine ophthalmic or cidofovir ophthalmic
• ophthalmic glucocorticoids contraindicated
