Epidemiology
- isolated from patients in India & Pakistan
- isolated from patients in the US in 2010; all received medical care in India[3]
Genetics
- encoded on a gene carried by both bacterial chromosomes & plasmids from E coli & Klebsiella pneumonia
Pharmacology
- confers resistance to carbapenems
- bacteria with NDM-1 appear to be sensitive to colistin & tigecycline
Clinical significance
- carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae & other similarly resistant Enterobacteriaceae are resistant to most antimicrobial drugs, & are frequently fatal[2]
