Etiology

• results from an unusually short, thick lingual frenulum

Pathology

• varies in degree of severity
• complete ankyloglossia results in tongue is tethered to the floor of the mouth

Clinical manifestations

• difficulty swallowing, oropharyngeal dysphagia
• dysarthria
• oral hygiene problems
• social effects
