ankyloglossia (tongue tie)

Etiology

• X-linked cleft palate with ankyloglossia

Pathology

• lingual frenulum with excessive attachment to the bottom of the tongue

Clinical manifestations

• presents in infancy
• bottom of the tongue is attached to the floor of the mouth
• restricts movement of the tip of the tongue

Complications

• rarely associated with speech impairment or dysphagia

Management

• surgery is seldom necessary
• frenulotomy
