Indications
- evaluation of recent episode of hemoglobinuria
- evaluation of renal involvement in hemochromatosis
Reference interval
- < 0.1 mg/day
Principle
- free hemoglobin is rapidly filtered by the renal glomeruli & reabsorbed in the proximal tubules where it is catabolized into ferritin & hemosiderin
- hemosiderin will appear in the urine 2-3 days after an episode of acute hemolysis that resulted in hemoglobinuria
- at this time hemoglobin in urine is often negative

- renal involvement in hemochromatoisis
- chronic hemolysis
