Laboratory
- anti HDV in serum (serology)
- HDAg indicates active infection
- HBeAg is negative (HBV replication is suppressed)
RT-PCR/northern blot/in-situ hybridization is confirmatory
Clinical significance
- hepatitis D virus only infects patients with concurrent hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection
