Introduction
sclerosis of the tympanic membrane
Etiology
Pathology
- hylanized collagen in the submucosa in lamellar arrangement
- mature fibrocytes betweem collagen fibers
- calcification may occur
Clinical manifestations
- white, opaqe spot or spots may be seen on a background of a normally translucent tympanic membrane
- hearing is intact if limited to the tympanic membrane
- involvement of the malleus, incus, or stapes may result in conductive hearing loss (see otosclerosis)
