sclerosis of the tympanic membrane

Etiology

• otitis media

Pathology

• hylanized collagen in the submucosa in lamellar arrangement
• mature fibrocytes betweem collagen fibers
• calcification may occur

Clinical manifestations

• white, opaqe spot or spots may be seen on a background of a normally translucent tympanic membrane
• hearing is intact if limited to the tympanic membrane
• involvement of the malleus, incus, or stapes may result in conductive hearing loss (see otosclerosis)

Complications

• tympanic membrane perforation
• otosclerosis
