Function
- the 3 auditory ossicles (incus, malleus, staps) facilitate transmission of sound from the tympanic membrane to the vestibular (oval) window
- the incus is the middle of the 3 auditory ossicles
- the incus articulates with both the malleus & the stapes completing the connection from the tympanic membrane to the vestibular (oval) window.
Structure
- the incus has a body & 2 processes (long crus & short crus)
- at the tip of the long crus is a small knob, the lenticular process which articulates with the head of the stapes
- the body of the incus articulates with the head of the malleus
