Introduction

Study characteristics:

• 1791 veterans, mean age 60 years
• long-standing diabetes type 2 (mean duration 11.5 years)

Groups:

• intensive therapy
• standard therapy

Follow-up:

• 5.6 years

Results:

• mean hemoglobin A1c 6.9% with intensive therapy
• mean hemoglobin A1c 8.4% with standard therapy
• no differences in outcomes
  • death from any cause
  • macrovascular complications
    • cardiovascular deaths
    • time to 1st cardiovascular event
  • microvascular events
    • retinopathy
    • nephropathy
    • neuropathy
• hypoglycemic events more frequent with intensive therapy
