Drug interactions
- caffeine may reduce anti-inflammatory activity of methotrexate; methotrexate diminishes inflammation by increasing adenosine concentrations; caffeine might interfere because it is an adenosine A-2A receptor antagonist; one small study suggests that more caffeine consumption is associated with less benefit from methotrexate therapy
Management
- limit caffeine intake to < 120 mg/day for patients taking methotrexate
