Introduction
The period of life from puberty to completion of growth. Not exactly equivalent to teenager.
Epidemiology
- cigarette smoking among U.S. high school students has dropped to the lowest level in more than 20 years (16%)[2]
- alcohol use has decreased since 1991 (51% to 35%)
- physical fights have decreased since 1991 (43% to 25%)
- marijuana use has increased since 1991 (15% to 23%)[2]
- 17% have used prescription drugs (Oxycontin, Xanax) without a prescription at least once[4]
- in 2013, many teens texted or emailed while driving (41%)
- in 2013. many teens did not use a condom during sexual intercourse (41%)
- in 2013. many teens never or rarely wore a helmet while riding a bicycle (88%)
- nearly half of teens were trying to lose weight[2]
- teen birth rates declinied 41% nationwide 2006-2014[3]
- hispanics with largest decrease, 51%
- counties with highest teen birth rates had
- higher unemployment
- lower average household income
- lower educational achievement[3]
