Introduction

Muscle of the 3rd layer of plantar muscles of the foot.

Origin

• transverse head:
  • capsules of lateral 4 metatarsophalangeal joints
• oblique head:
  • lateral cuneiform
  • bases of 3rd & 4th metatarsal bones

Insertion

• lateral side of the base of the proximal phalanx of the 1st (great) toe

Action

adducts 1st (great) toe

Innervation

lateral plantar nerve
