levator ani (ilio- & pubococcygeus {puborectalis})

Introduction

Formed from iliococcygeus & pubococcygeus (puborectalis) muscles.

Origin

• posterior body of pubis
• tendinous arch of the levator ani
• spine of ischium

Insertion

• anococcygeal ligament
• sides of the lower part of the sacrum & coccyx

Action

• resists prolapsing forces & draws the anus upward after defecation
• support the pelvic viscera

Innervation

nerve to the levator ani (S4)
