Introduction
Formed from iliococcygeus & pubococcygeus (puborectalis) muscles.
Origin
- posterior body of pubis
- tendinous arch of the levator ani
- spine of ischium
Insertion
- anococcygeal ligament
- sides of the lower part of the sacrum & coccyx
Action
- resists prolapsing forces & draws the anus upward after defecation
- support the pelvic viscera
Innervation
nerve to the levator ani (S4)
