Introduction

Four intrinsic muscles of the 2nd layer of plantar muscles.

Origin

• 1st: from tibial side of tendon to 2nd toe of flexor digitorum longus
• 2nd, 3rd & 4th: from adjacent sides of all 4 tendons of flexor digitorum longus

Insertion

• tibial side of extensor tendon on dorsum of each of the 4 lateral toes

Action

flex the proximal & extend the middle & distal phalanges

Innervation

• medial plantar nerve (1st lumbrical)
• lateral plantar nerve (2nd, 3rd & 4th lumbricals)
