intermuscular septum

Introduction

Applicable to the aponeurotic sheets separating various muscles of the limbs & arms.

• Anterior & posterior crural intermuscular septa: pass from the deep surface of the crural fascia thereby attaching to the corresponding margins of the fibula.
• Lateral intermuscular septum: extends from the iliotibial tract to the lateral lip of the linea aspera & lateral supracondylar line of the femur.
• Transverse intermuscular septum: separate the muscles in the posterior compartment into superficial & deep.

The interosseous membrane & the crural intermuscular septa divide the leg into three compartments:

• Anterior (extensor)
• Lateral (fibular)
• Posterior (flexor)
