iliopubic tract (deep crural arch, Thompson ligament)

Introduction

The thickened inferior margin of the transversalis fascia that appears as a fibrous band running parallel & posterior (deep) to the inguinal ligament. Seen only when the inguinal region is viewed from its internal aspect.

• Contributes to the posterior wall of the inguinal canal
• Bridges the external iliofemoral vessels from the iliopectineal arch to the superior pubic ramus

Demarcation:

• The inferior edge of the deep inguinal ring & the medial margin of the femoral canal.

Significance:

• A useful landmark during laproscopic inguinal hernia repair.
