laryngopharynx (laryngeal part of pharynx, laryngeal pharynx, hypopharynx)

Introduction
One of three divisions of the pharynx. Extends from the oropharynx above to the larynx & esophagus below at the level of the inferior border of the cricoid cartilage. Posteriorly, the hypopharynx is related to the vertebral bodies (C1-C6).
- posterior & lateral walls are formed by the middle & inferior constrictor muscles
- internally the wall is formed by the palatopharyngeus & stylopharyngeus muscles
Communication: -> communicates with the larynx through the laryngeal inlet
Function
- Serves as a passageway for food & air & consequently is lined with squamous epithelium.
