constrictor pharyngis superior (cephalopharyngeus)

Introduction

Most superior component of outer circular muscle layer of pharynx.

Origin

• medial pterygoid plate
• pterygomandibular raphe
• mylohyoid line of mandible
• mucous membrane of floor of mouth & side of tongue

Insertion

• pharyngeal raphe in the posterior wall of the pharynx

Action

• narrows pharynx
• helps to seal nasopharynx off from oropharynx
• contracts with peristalsis during swallowing

Innervation

pharyngeal plexus
