Introduction
Most superior component of outer circular muscle layer of pharynx.
Origin
- medial pterygoid plate
- pterygomandibular raphe
- mylohyoid line of mandible
- mucous membrane of floor of mouth & side of tongue
Insertion
- pharyngeal raphe in the posterior wall of the pharynx
Action
- narrows pharynx
- helps to seal nasopharynx off from oropharynx
- contracts with peristalsis during swallowing
