Midway between anterior & posterior poles of thalamus.

Afferents

• internal segment of the globus pallidus via the thalamic fasiculus, ansa lenticularis & lenticular fasciculus
• area 4 of the motor cortex

Efferents

• putamen (major efferents)
• collaterals reach cerebral cortex
