Introduction

A loop in the cervical plexus consisting of fibers from the 1st 3 cervical nerves. Fibers from a loop between the C1 spinal nerve & C2 spinal nerve accompany the hypoglossal nerve (CN XII) for a short distance, then diverge forming the superior root of the ansa cervicalis. Fibers from a loop between the C2 spinal nerve & C3 spinal nerve form the inferior root of the ansa cervicales. Generally the nerve roots merge forming the ansa cervicales which gives rise to branches innervating the infrahyoid muscles.
