Edinger-Westphal nucleus

Introduction

Visceral motor (parasympathetic) component of CN 3.

• paired nuclei located in midbrain near aqueduct of Sylvius medial to the oculomotor nucleus
• parasympathetic fibers originating in the Edinger-Westphal nucleus innervate:
  • pupillary sphincter
  • ciliary muscle
• relay in ciliary ganglion
