superior mesenteric plexus

Introduction

An autonomic plexus; a continuation of the abdominal aortic plexus.

It send fibers to the intestines & forms with the vagus nerve the subserous plexus, myenteric plexus & submucous plexus.

This plexusis so dense that it results in the appearance of a perivascular collar distinguishing the superior mesenteric artery from the superior mesenteric vein with various radiologic imaging modalities, including ultrasound.
