demyelination

Etiology

• central demyelination occurs within the central nervous system as in multiple sclerosis
• peripheral demyelination occurs in peripheral nerves as in Guillain-Barre syndrome

Pathology

• loss of the myelin sheath with preservation of axons or nerve fiber tracts
