Introduction

A systemic hormonal system regulated by circadian rhythms, environmental stimulation & feedback inhibition.

It consists of:

• neurons in the hypothalamus
  • secrete corticotropin releasing hormone/factor (CRF/CRH)
    • CRF released into the portal circulation
  • inhibited by cortisol portal circulation to stimulate
• cells within the anterior pituitary
  • secrete ACTH
  • stimulated by CRF from the portal circulation
  • inhibited by cortisol
• cells in the adrenal cortex
  • secrete cortisol (human)
  • stimulated by ACTH
