Introduction
A systemic hormonal system regulated by circadian rhythms, environmental stimulation & feedback inhibition.
It consists of:
- neurons in the hypothalamus
- secrete corticotropin releasing hormone/factor (CRF/CRH)
- CRF released into the portal circulation
- inhibited by cortisol portal circulation to stimulate
- secrete corticotropin releasing hormone/factor (CRF/CRH)
- cells within the anterior pituitary
- secrete ACTH
- stimulated by CRF from the portal circulation
- inhibited by cortisol
- cells in the adrenal cortex
