From the Greek bromos meaning stench Discovery credited to French chemist Antoine-Jerome Balard in 1826.

Characteristics
- only non-metal that is a liquid at room temperature
- reddish-brown in color
- very volatile liquid with a disagreeable odor
- extremely toxic
- cause severe burns on contact with skin
- noxious vapors irritate mucous membranes
- corrosive
Uses
- mostly used as silver bromide in photographic film
- once used in producing leaded gasoline additive ethylene dibromide
- fire retardants
- tear gas
- fumigants
- disinfectants
- pesticides
