Introduction
From the Spanish platina meaning silver. Known since ancient times. Used by Indians of South America before European influence. Not recognized by western scientists until 1735. Credit for discovery generally given to Antonio de Ulloa.
Occurrence
- occurs naturally in its native form in the Urals of Russia, Canada & South America (Columbia & Peru)
- by-product of copper & nickel refining
Characteristics
- silverly-white, lustrous, solid, heavy metal
- ductile, malleable
- very resistant to corrosion
- non volatile
- fuses with difficulty
- platinum salts are toxic
