Introduction
Consumption:
- should not be ingested by people with phenylketonuria
- pregnant women advised to injest only moderate amounts
- U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued statements that aspartame does not pose a threat to the general population.
- use of artificial sweeteners may facilitate reduction in sugar intake & thus in total calorie intake[2]
- potential benefit in glycemic control[2]
Adverse effects
- artificial sweeteners (especially aspartame & acesulfame-K) are associated with increased cancer risk (RR=1.15 for aspartame)[3]
- WHO declares aspartame a possible carcinogen - link to hepatocellular carcinoma[5]
- aspartame at doses < 15% of FDA maximum daily allowance can fuel anxiety[4]
