Introduction

Homogentisate is an intermediate in the oxidation of tyrosine & phenylalanine to acetoacetate & fumarate. It is formed from p-hydroxyphenyl pyruvate by the action of p-hydroxyphenylpyruvate hydroxylase. Homogentisate oxidase cleaves homogentisate to 4-maleylacetoacetate.
