mupirocin (Bactroban)

Introduction

Tradename: Bactroban.

Indications

• topical treatment of impetigo due to S. aureus, beta-hemolytic Streptococcus & S. pyogenes.
• eradication of nasal colonization of pathogen carriers with MRSA
  • apparently MRSA resistance develops
• furunculosis
• ecthyma
• folliculitis
• epidermolysis bullosa
• prevention of infection from traumatic wounds

Dosage

• impetigo: apply 2% ointment TID for 3-5 days.
• nasal: apply BID 5 days.

Ointment: 2% (15 g, 30 g). Bactroban nasal 1 g tube, carton of 10.

Adverse effects

• not common (1-10%)
  • swelling, pruritus, rash, erythema, dry skin, burning, stinging, pain, tenderness
