Introduction
Tradename: Viroptic.
Indications
- treatment of primary keratoconjunctivitis & recurrent epithelial keratitis caused by Herpes simplex virus types 1 & 2
- effective in treatment of epithelial keratitis resistant to idoxuridine
Dosage
- 1 drop every 2 hours while awake, up to 9 drops/day
- continue with 1 drop every 4 hours for an additional 7 days after re-epithelialization of corneal ulcer
- do NOT exceed 21 days of therapy
Solution: 1%. (7.5 mL).
Adverse effects
- not common (1-10%)
- uncommon (< 1%)
Mechanism of action
- replaces thymidine in viral DNA synthesis
- causes production of defective viral proteins
- reversibly inhibits thymidylate synthetase
