Indications
- cyanide poisoning
- used in combination with sodium nitrite in the cyanide antidote pack
- arsenic poisoning
Dosage
- cyanide & nitroprusside (poisoning)
- 2.5-5 mL/min IV to a maximum of 50 mL

- arsenic poisoning
Pharmacokinetics
- distributes to extracellular fluid
- 1/2life 30-40 minutes
- excreted unchanged in the urine
Adverse effects
- not common (1-10%)
- hypotension, coma, CNS depression (secondary to thiocyanate toxicity), psychosis, tinnitus, confusion, weakness, contact dermatitis, local irritation
Poisoning: Contact Regional Poison Control Center as needed for consultation on use as an antidote
