ethanolamine oleate (Ethamolin, Neosclerol)

Introduction

Tradenames: Ethamolin.

Indications

• sclerosing agent used for treatment of bleeding esophageal varices

Dosage

adults:

• 1.5-5 mL/varix
• up to 20 mL total or 0.4 mg/kg
• decrease dosage for patients with hepatic dysfunction

Injection: 5% (2 mL)

Adverse effects

• not common (1-10%)
  • pleural effusion, esophageal ulcer, pyrexia, retrosternal pain, esophageal stricture, pneumonia
• uncommon (< 1%)
  • injection necrosis, acute renal failure, aspiration, anaphylaxis
