Introduction
Tradename: Boniva (FDA approved 2003) Generic FDA-approved 3/2012[6]
Indications
- osteoporosis
- diminishes risk of vertebral fractures
- does not diminish risk of hip fracture[7]
Contraindications
- renal insufficiency
- creatinine clearance < 30 mL/min
- serum creatinine > 2.3 mg/dL
- uncorrected hypocalcemia (IV)
Dosage
Try to take on same day each month.
+/- 1 week OK if average interval is one month[4]
Do NOT eat or lie down for 60 minutes after taking monthly Boniva.
Prefilled syringe 3mg/3mL
Monitor
serum creatinine prior each IV dose
Adverse effects
- arthralgia (8-9%)
- back pain (7%)
- hypertension 5-7%
- abdominal pain 5-6%
- GI distress < 5%
- transient hypocalcemia

none reported
- drug interaction(s) of bisphosphonates with proton pump inhibitors
- drug interaction(s) of bisphosphonate with Ca+2
Mechanism of action
- bisphosphonate
- reduces absolute vertebral fracture risk 5%[4]
