Introduction

A benign, solitary hair follicle tumor.

Pathology

• cells resembling basal cell carcinoma
• areas of epithelial necrosis
• eosinophilic ghost cells
• variable calcification
• foreign body giant cell reaction in fibrous stroma

Genetics

• some cases associated with beta-catenin mutations

Clinical manifestations

• often occurs in childhood

Complications

• rarely, malignant transformation to pilomatrix carcinoma
