Introduction
16 exons (exons 0-14 & exon 4a).
Alternative splicing
- microtubule associated protein tau forms generated by alternative splicing of 11 of 16 exons
- exon 0 is part of the promoter
- exons 9, 10, 11, & 12 encode microtubule-binding domains
- exons 1, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 12, & 13 are constitutively expressed
- splicing of exons 2, 3 & 10 produce 6 alternatively spliced forms
- thus 3 or 4 microtubule-binding domains occcur in tau forms depending upon alternative splicing of exon 10
- exons 6 & 8 are not transcribed in human CNS
