Function
- conversion of interphase chromatin into mitotic-like condense chromosomes
- introduces positive supercoils into relaxed DNA in the presence of topoisomerase 1 & converts nicked DNA into positive knotted forms in the presence of topoisomerase 2
Structure
- components include:
Compartment
- in interphase cells, most condensin is found in the cytoplasm, less is associated with chromatin
- during mitosis, most condensin is associated with chromatin
- with onset of prophase, regulatory subunits of condensin are phosphorylated by CDC2, leading to condensin's association with chromosome arms & to chromosome condensation
- dissociation from chromosomes occurs in late telophase
