Function
- required for autophagy
- conjugates to ATG12 & associates with isolation membrane to form cup-shaped isolation membrane & autophagosome
- the conjugate detaches from the membrane immediately before or after autophagosome formation is completed (putative)
- may play a role in the apoptotic process, possibly within the modified cytoskeleton
- its expression is a relatively late event in apoptosis, occurring downstream of caspase activity
- conjugated to ATG12, essential for autophagy, but not required for association with isolation membrane
Structure
belongs to the ATG5 family
Compartment
cytoplasm, colocalizes with nonmuscle actin
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=2; long, short
Expression
- ubiquitous
- the mRNA is present at similar levels in viable & apoptotic cells, whereas the protein is highly expressed in apoptotic cells
- induced by apoptotic stimuli
