protein Vpr (viral protein R, R ORF protein)

Function

• transport of the viral pre-integration complex to the nucleus during early stages of infection -necessary for viral infection of non-dividing macrophages.
• anti-apoptotic effect, high level of expression induces apoptosis.
• interacts with mitochondrial permeability transition pore complex (PTPC), presumably throughthe binding of ANT proteins -induces a rapid dissipation of the mitochondrial transmembrane potential
• prevents infected cells from undergoing mitosis & proliferating, by inducing arrest or delay in G2 phase of cell cycle
• interacts with COP6 Virion, nucleus, secreted protein
