Introduction

Precursor cleaved to yield capsid proteins. (Group-specific AntiGen ==> GAG)

Contains: Matrix protein p17 (MA) Capsid protein p24 (CA) Spacer peptide p2 Nucleocapsid protein p7 (NC) Spacer peptide p1; p6-gag]

Function

  • orchestrated tasks during assembly, budding, maturation, infection stages of the viral replication cycle
  • during viral assembly, the proteins form membrane associations & self-associations that ultimately result in budding of an immature virion from the infected cell
  • during viral assembly to selectively binds & packages 2 plus strands of genomic RNA
  • endogenous Gag proteins may have kept, lost or modified their original function during evolution.
