Function
- RNA-binding protein
- DRBM 3 domain major RNA-binding motif
- microtubule-dependent transport of neuronal RNA from perikarya to dendrite
- localization of specific mRNAs to dendrites as prerequisite for neurite outgrowth & plasticity
- interacts with exportin XPO5 via DRBM 3 domain, requires RNA & RAN bound to GTP
- interacts with microtubules
- isoforms 2 & 3 may also interact with ribosomes, independent of translation
Structure
- contains 4 DRBM domains (double-stranded RNA-binding domains)
Compartment
- cytoplasm, nucleus, nucleolus
- shuttles between nucleolus, nucleus & cytoplasm
- nuclear export of isoform 1 is independent of XPO1/CRM1 & requires exportin XPO
- nuclear export of isoform 2 & 3 can occur by both XPO1/CRM1- dependent & XPO1/CRM1-independent pathways
- found in large cytoplasmic ribonucleoprotein (RNP) granules present in the actin rich regions of myelinating processes
- associated with microtubules, polysomes & endoplasmic reticulum
- recruited to stress granules upon inhibition of translation or oxidative stress
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=5
