Function
- role in the oxidative metabolism of xenobiotics including drugs & pesticides
- N-oxygenates primary aliphatic alkylamines as well as secondary & tertiary amines
- role in the metabolism of trimethylamine, via trimethylamine N-oxide
- also able to perform S-oxidation when acting on sulfide compounds
N,N-dimethylaniline + NADPH + O2 <--> N,N-dimethylaniline N-oxide + NADP+ + H2O
Cofactor: FAD
Structure
belongs to the FMO family
Compartment
- microsome membrane
- endoplasmic reticulum membrane
Expression
liver
Pathology
- defects in FMO3 are the cause of trimethylaminuria
