Function

• Na+-dependent amino acid transporter which countertransport protons
• mediates the saturable, pH-sensitive, & electrogenic cotransport of several neutral amino acids including glycine, asparagine, alanine, serine, glutamine & histidine with Na+
• not inhibited by Li+

Kinetic parameters: KM=0.6 mM for histidine (at pH 8.0)

• homozygous interstitial microdeletion at Xp11.23 causes also loss of FTSJ1 & the link between SLC38A5 & the disease is not clear
