Function
- Na+-dependent amino acid transporter which countertransport protons
- mediates the saturable, pH-sensitive, & electrogenic cotransport of several neutral amino acids including glycine, asparagine, alanine, serine, glutamine & histidine with Na+
- not inhibited by Li+
Kinetic parameters: KM=0.6 mM for histidine (at pH 8.0)
Structure
- belongs to the amino acid/polyamine transporter 2 family
Compartment
cell membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=2
Expression
- predominantly expressed in stomach, brain, liver, lung & intestinal tract
Pathology
- chromosomal aberration involving SLC38A5 is found in 3 brothers with non-syndromic mental retardation
- homozygous interstitial microdeletion at Xp11.23 causes also loss of FTSJ1 & the link between SLC38A5 & the disease is not clear
