- inhibits lipid peroxidation in erythrocytes
- may function as an endogenous antioxidant & peroxidase

Pathology
- detected with variable frequency in serum of patients with Eales disease, posterior uveitis, leprosy, tuberculosis & rheumatoid arthritis
- not detected in serum of healthy controls
