• may be involved in the maintenance of the mucosal structure as a gel-like component of the mucosa
• interacts with the Fc portion of IgG

Structure

• contains 12 TIL domains (trypsin inhibitory-like domains)
• contains 13 VWFD domains
• N-terminal IgGFc-binding region is primate-specific

• mainly expressed in placenta & colon epithelium
• expressed in thyroid
• present in serum, with higher levels in patients with various autoimmune disases (at protein level)

Pathology

• down-regulated in thyroid carcinomas
• increased serum levels in patients with various autoimmune disases
