Introduction
The Aschoff body is an area of fibrinoid necrosis surrounded by an infiltration of lymphocytes, macrophages, an occasional plasma cell & activated histiocytes which may be multinucleated (Aschoff or Anitschkow cell). The Aschoff body may be found in any of the 3 layers of the heart - the pericardium, myocardium or endo- cardium - & is pathognomonic of rheumatic fever.
